Talking about our faith is not something that we should be afraid of. Nobody should stop us from doing it. That is why when Vince Gill was told not to say anything or sing about Jesus before the event, he did it otherwise.
Vince Gill is one of the most popular country singer-songwriters. With songs like “When I Call Your Name,” “Whenever You Come Around,” and “Don’t Let Our Love Start Slipping Away,” it’s safe to say that many are more than happy to hear his voice when he performs on stage. And it doesn’t matter what song he is singing.
If other artists would listen to such instructions, Vince Gill decided to come back with the most incredible religious performance, and he didn’t think twice about doing it. He is a devout Christian and almost stopped performing a song on Grand Ole Opry’s stage, alongside Little Big Town.
Inducting a new country music star into the Grand Ole Opry Grand Ole Opry is such a big event. Even up to this day, it continues to be one of the crowning moments of country music. The event includes notable names in the music industry like Patsy Cline, Kitty Wells, Hank Williams, Carrie Underwood, Brad Paisley, Dixie Chicks, Dolly Parton, Garth Brooks, Reba McEntire, and Alan Jackson.
That is why this event was so unique and is certainly a night to remember. Before the event, Vince Gill was told not to say anything nor to sing about Jesus.
When the Little Big Town group was recently inducted, it was one of those memorable nights. As expected, it was a big moment when Vince Gill joined the group on stage. What made it so special was when the group performed their rendition of one of the most memorable versions of “Why Me Lord.”
Only two guitar players joined the group, including Karen Fairchild, Kimberly Schlapman, Jimi Westbrook, and Phillip Sweet. It did not take long for them to overpower the stadium with their powerful voices. And having Gill on that performance was indeed the icing on the cake.
The group starts at a smooth pace while singing the touching lyrics. Gill was standing in the background, singing softly as the voices complement one another.
They passionately belted out the following lyrics:
“What have I ever done to deserve.
Even one of the pleasures I’ve known?
Tell me, Lord.
What did I ever do to deserve loving You?
And the kindness
You’ve shown?
So help me, Jesus, my soul’s in Your hand.
Jesus, my soul’s in Your hand.”
Even though Little Big Town takes over almost the entire performance, the audience can still hear Gill’s powerful voice in the background. That evening was such a huge celebration. And as soon as the song ended, the audience can’t help but wildly applaud the epic performance!
“Why Me Lord” was first written and recorded by all-star country legend Kris Kristofferson in 1972. The singer wrote it after attending a church service during the lowest points of his life. He turned the lyrics into an inspiration for country music fans everywhere.
Other singers have also performed and recorded this memorable song, including Merle Haggard, Johnny Cash, and “The King” himself, Elvis Presley.
