The Grammy winner’s death was attributed to complications of class III obesity.
Class III obesity is a disease in which a person “has a body mass index (BMI) of 40 or higher or a BMI of 35 or higher and is experiencing obesity-related health conditions,” according to the Cleveland Clinic.
Mandisa, who studied music in college, competed on the fifth season of American Idol where she finished the competition in the top nine.
Following her run on Idol, she released her debut album True Beauty in 2007. The album debuted on top of the Billboard Top Christian Albums chart and earned her a Grammy nomination.
She would go on to release five more albums over the course of her career.
Shortly after her death, Idol honored Mandisa with a special performance of “Shackles (Praise You)” performed by Idol alums Colton Dixon, Melinda Doolittle, and Danny Gokey.
“Mandisa was an adored icon on ‘American Idol’ and in the music industry,” the show said in a statement at the time.
“She had become a platinum-selling artist and had won several Grammys for her music. Her passing has left everyone on the show heartbroken, and we extend our deepest condolences to her family.”
