In 2015, following a brain aneurysm, Mitchell retreated from the public eye. The “Big Yellow Taxi” singer said though she survived the brain aneurysm, she had to relearn a lot of basics.
“I’m learning,” she said. “I’m looking at videos that are on the net to see where I put my fingers, you know. It’s amazing what an aneurysm knocks out – how to get out of chair!… You have to relearn everything.”
Carlile was one of many musicians who helped Mitchell get back to where she was at her prime.
“[I’ve] watched one of the most miraculous things I’ve seen in my life,” Carlile said in 2023 when Mitchell performed at the Gorge Amphitheater in Quincy, Washington, “and now you get to see it.”
It was Mitchell’s first headlining, ticketed performance in 20 years.
